This chemical can damage DNA and is linked to cancers of the digestive tract in humans. It can also leach into water supplies. For animals, the plant is toxic to cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses. It can also cause a vitamin B1 deficiency known as beriberi. Interestingly, bracken may even be used to create new insecticides.
