Aspleniaceae is a large family of ferns known as spleenworts. These plants are very important for studying how living things are related. They grow in many different parts of the world. You can find them in warm tropical areas and cooler temperate zones. Some grow in the ground as terrestrial plants. Others grow on rocks or even on other plants as epiphytes.

Most spleenworts have a very specific way they work. They grow from stems called rhizomes that crawl or stand up. These rhizomes often have scales with a lattice-like pattern. In the Asplenium nidus fern, the rhizome forms a basket shape. This basket catches bits of dirt and old plant matter. The leaves can be simple or divided into many small parts. A key feature is the sori, which are long lines of spores. These sori usually sit on one side of a leaf vein. A thin flap called an indusium covers the edge of the sorus.

Scientists have changed how they group these ferns over time. Edward Newman first described the family in 1840. He originally included three groups named Athyrium, Asplenium, and Scolopendrium. Today, we know that Athyrium belongs to a different family. Scolopendrium is now considered the same as Asplenium. In 2016, a group called PPG I created a new classification. They used a narrow view that only includes two main groups.

There are many different species within this family. The largest group is Asplenium, which has about 700 species. These ferns live almost everywhere except Antarctica and the high Arctic. The second group is Hymenasplenium, which has about 40 species. These smaller groups live in tropical and subtropical places. Some spleenworts even live in moving water as aquatic plants. They are found in many different habitats across the globe.

Learning about spleenworts helps us see how nature is organized. Just like how we group animals, scientists group plants by their traits. You might notice the X-shape in a fern's leaf stalk. This shape comes from two vascular bundles joined together. These bundles act like tiny pipes to move things through the plant. Looking at the sori on a leaf is like looking at a plant's fingerprint. Each detail helps scientists tell one species from another.
