It is a story that mixes adventure with deep religious ideas. Many people believe the book shows how God tests people who stay faithful. It also teaches that God hears prayers and protects His people. Most scholars see it as a special kind of story. It uses elements from travel tales, romance, and even comedy. It acts as a guide for people living far from home. This helped them keep their identity and their faith alive.

The story follows two different families in different places. In the city of Nineveh, a man named Tobit lives a very pious life. However, he loses his sight after some sparrows cause an accident with his eyes. Meanwhile, in a place called Ecbatana, a woman named Sarah is suffering. A demon named Asmodeus has caused trouble for her many wedding nights. To help them, God sends the angel Raphael on a mission.

Raphael travels in a human disguise to guide Tobit's son, Tobias. This journey leads to many amazing and life-changing events for both families.

Historians believe this book was written quite a long time ago. It likely dates to the 3rd or early 2nd century BC. The story is set during the 8th century BC. Scholars think it was originally written in a Semitic language. We know this because fragments were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. These fragments include four pieces in Aramaic and one in Hebrew. These ancient pieces date back to the 1st or 2nd century BC. Even though the story has some errors in geography, it remains very important.

There are many different ways people view this book today. Different religious groups have different names for it. Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Christians call it deuterocanonical. This means it is part of a "second canon" or list of holy books. Protestant traditions often call it the Apocrypha. They find it useful for teaching and for worship services. However, they do not view it as part of the main biblical canon. This is because they follow the Masoretic canon instead.
