Body fluid

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Your body is mostly made of liquid. These liquids are called body fluids or biofluids. They are very important for a living thing to work. The amount of water you have depends on your body. Lean healthy men have about 60% water in their bodies. This is between 60 and 67 percent of their weight. Women usually have a little less water. Their water is about 52 to 55 percent of their weight.

People with less body fat have more water. A lean man might have 42 liters of water. This is a large amount of liquid.

This water stays in different areas called compartments. Most of the water stays inside your cells. This is called intracellular fluid. It includes the cytosol and fluids in the cell nucleus. There is about 28 to 32 liters of this fluid. The rest of the water stays outside the cells. This is called extracellular fluid. It stays in a two-to-one ratio with the fluid inside cells. This means there is much more fluid inside than outside.

Extracellular fluid is split into two main parts. One part is the interstitial fluid. This fluid sits outside both cells and blood vessels. It makes up about 12 liters of your body fluid. The other part is the intravascular fluid. This is also called blood plasma. It is the liquid found inside your blood vessels. This part is about 4 liters. The ratio between these two fluids is three-to-one.

There are even smaller parts within these fluids. The interstitial fluid has two smaller groups. One is the lymphatic fluid. This is about 8 liters of fluid. The other is the transcellular fluid. This is about 4 liters. The intravascular fluid is also split into parts. It has venous volume and arterial volume. The arterial volume has a special part called effective arterial blood volume. This part is useful to think about but hard to measure.

Doctors study these fluids to learn about health. They use clinical samples for this work. These samples can be blood or saliva. They can also be tissue fluids or excreta. These materials help doctors find a disease or a condition. Doctors call these samples a specimen. They use them for a diagnostic examination. This helps them understand how a body is working.
