Most of this liquid is inside your cells. This is called intracellular fluid. A lean man has about 42 liters of water. This is about 60% of his weight. Women have a little less. They have about 52 to 55% water. People with less body fat have more water.

Some liquid stays outside your cells. This is the extracellular fluid. It is split into two main parts. One part is the interstitial fluid. This fluid sits outside your cells and blood vessels. It is about 12 liters. The other part is the intravascular fluid. This is the fluid inside your blood vessels. We also call this blood plasma. It is about 4 liters.

The interstitial fluid has two smaller parts. One part is lymphatic fluid. This is about 8 liters. The other part is transcellular fluid. This is about 4 liters. The blood fluid is also split. It has venous volume and arterial volume. These parts help your body work every day.
