It lives in many parts of Europe and Asia. Some small groups also live in Canada. Most of these birds are migratory. This means they fly to warmer places when it gets cold. They can live for a very long time. One bird was recorded living for at least 32.9 years in the wild.

These birds change how they look during the year. In the summer, adults have a chocolate-brown head. It looks black if you see it from far away. They also have red bills and red legs. In the winter, they lose that dark head. Instead, they only have two dark spots near their eyes.

This change happens every year.

Scientists have studied these gulls for a long time. A man named Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1766. He was a naturalist from Sweden. He originally named them Larus ridibundus. The name ridibundus is a Latin word that means "laughing."

Later, scientists moved them to a new group called Chroicocephalus. This name comes from Greek words for "colored head."

There are millions of these birds in the world. About 2 to 3 million pairs live on Earth. Most of them are found in Europe. In Great Britain, there are about 300,000 pairs. In Poland, there are about 250,000 pairs.

Their home range is slowly growing toward the west. They first moved to Iceland in 1911 and Greenland in 1969.

Black-headed gulls are very smart at finding food. They eat fish, worms, seeds, and even scraps in towns. They are also very noisy birds. You might hear their loud "kree-ar" call.

Parents also work hard to protect their babies. They carry eggshells away from the nest. This helps hide the nest from animals that might eat the chicks. It is a clever way to keep the family safe.
