It lives in many places in Europe and Asia. Some live in Canada, too. Most of these birds migrate. This means they fly to warmer places for the winter.

In summer, adults have a dark brown head. It looks black from a distance. They also have red bills and red legs. In winter, the dark head goes away. Instead, they have two dark spots near their eyes.

These birds are very busy. They eat many things like fish, worms, and seeds. They are also very noisy.

You might hear their loud "kree-ar" call.

Parents work hard to keep chicks safe. Once the eggs hatch, parents move the shells away. This helps hide the nest from predators.

This way, the nest stays hard to find. These birds can live a long time. Some live for at least 32.9 years in the wild.
