BL Lacertae object

Some parts of space are very bright and active. These are called BL Lac objects. They are a type of active galactic nucleus. This means the center of a galaxy is very busy.

These objects are part of a group called blazars. A blazar is a galaxy with a special beam of energy. This beam is called a relativistic jet. It moves at speeds very close to the speed of light. These objects are very important to study. They help us learn about how galaxies work.

How do these objects work? It all depends on how the jet points. In a BL Lac object, the jet points toward Earth. This makes the light look very bright to us. The light also changes its brightness very quickly. This is called rapid flux variability. The light also has optical polarization. This means the light waves move in a specific way.

Because the light lacks certain lines, it looks very smooth. This can make it hard to tell how far away they are.

People first began to study these objects many years ago. John L. Schmitt noticed something strange in 1968. He matched the object BL Lacertae to a radio source. Other scientists saw the light change and move quickly. Peter Albert Strittmatter proposed the new class in 1972. He added four more objects to the group.

By 1976, there were 30 known objects. In 2017, the IceCube project found a neutrino. This tiny particle came from the object TXS 0506+056.

These objects live in huge types of galaxies. Most live in massive elliptical galaxies. These galaxies are large and shaped like a ball.

A survey in 2000 used the Hubble Space Telescope. It looked at 132 different BL Lac objects. Scientists found that host galaxies are seen in most images. They found that almost all are elliptical galaxies. They found very few disk-shaped galaxies in these groups. These galaxies are as bright as the biggest ones in clusters.

There are many different BL Lac objects to know. Some names include OJ 287 and AP Librae. You might also hear of Markarian 421 or Markarian 501. Others are named PKS 2155-304 and PKS 0521-365. Centaurus A is the closest one to our Milky Way.

Studying them is like looking at a cosmic flashlight. The jet is the beam of the light. It helps us see how much energy is in space.
