Some spots in space are very bright. We call these BL Lac objects. They are named after a special object called BL Lacertae.

These objects are a type of active galactic nucleus. This is a very active center of a galaxy. They change how bright they are very fast. Their light also has polarization. This means the light waves move in a certain way.

Scientists think these objects have a relativistic jet. This is a beam of power that moves near light speed. The jet points right at us. This makes the object look very bright. These objects live in massive elliptical galaxies. These are large, round groups of stars.

John L. Schmitt first saw the first one in 1968. He matched it with a radio object. Later, Peter Albert Strittmatter named this group in 1972. In 2017, a high energy particle was found near one. This particle is called a neutrino. It came from an object named TXS 0506+056.
