Bird migration

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Bird migration is a seasonal movement that many species perform twice a year.

These birds travel between their breeding grounds and their wintering grounds. Most birds fly north in the spring to find food and breed. The long summer days in the north help them feed their young. In the autumn, they fly south to find warmer weather. This movement helps them find food that stays available all year.

Migration is a very hard job for birds. They face many risks like predators and sickness. Moving long distances costs a lot of physical energy. To stay safe, many birds fly during the night. This helps them avoid the heat and some predators.

Birds use many clever ways to find their way. They use celestial cues, which means they look at the sun and stars. They also use the Earth's magnetic field to guide them. Some birds even use mental maps to navigate.

Many birds fly in flocks to help each other. Geese often fly in a V formation. This shape helps them save 12 to 20 percent of their energy. Some birds like the red knot fly even faster when they are in a group.

People have watched birds move for a very long time. In the Pacific, people used bird patterns to find land for over 3,000 years. Ancient Greeks also wrote about birds moving with the seasons. Aristotle noticed that cranes traveled from Scythia to the Nile.

For a long time, people thought some birds just slept through winter. They thought swallows hibernated instead of moving. This idea lasted until the end of the eighteenth century.

One famous discovery happened in 1822 in Germany.

A white stork was found in Mecklenburg with an arrow in it. The arrow was made from wood from central Africa. This proved the stork had flown a very long distance. This bird was called a Pfeilstorch, which means "Arrow stork." Today, we know about 1,800 species of birds that migrate long distances.

The Arctic tern holds the record for the longest trip. It flies between the Arctic and the Antarctic every year.

Not all migration looks the same. Some birds move up and down mountains instead of north and south. This is called altitudinal migration.

Some birds do not fly at all during their trips. Penguins migrate by swimming through the ocean. Some birds, like the emu, can even walk long distances on foot. This shows that migration is a way for many different animals to survive.
