Bill James is a famous baseball writer and historian. He uses math to study the game in a special way. He calls this method sabermetrics, a name inspired by the Society for American Baseball Research. Instead of just telling stories, he uses numbers to find out why teams win or lose.

His work changed how people think about sports. In 2006, Time magazine named him one of the most influential people in the world. He even helped the Boston Red Sox win four World Series championships during his seventeen years as an advisor.

James began his career in a very unusual way. In his mid-twenties, he worked night shifts as a security guard. He worked at a cannery that made Stokely-Van Camp's pork and beans.

During these quiet nights, he wrote baseball articles. Most writers at that time wrote about the excitement of the games. James did something different by asking specific questions. He would look at data to see which players helped their teams the most. This new style was so different that many editors did not think people would want to read it.

To reach readers, James began self-publishing his own books. In 1977, he released the first Baseball Abstract. It was only 68 pages long and featured 18 different types of statistics.

Only 75 people bought that very first edition. By 1978, the number of buyers grew to 250 people. His books became very popular, and by 1982, sales had increased tenfold. Eventually, a large media company agreed to publish his books for a much wider audience. He continued writing these annual books for many years.

James invented many new tools to measure how players perform. One tool is called Runs Created, which helps show a player's contribution to scoring.

He also created the Pythagorean Winning Percentage to explain the link between runs and wins. Another tool is called Range Factor, which measures how well a player plays defense. He even made a way to compare players from different eras using Similarity Scores. These tools help fans and teams understand the hidden details of the game. Even though he created many formulas, he always reminds people that luck and context are also important.

His ideas helped change the way professional baseball teams work. A famous book called Moneyball describes how teams used these math ideas to succeed.

In 2003, James joined the Boston Red Sox to help them with their baseball operations. He had different ideas about how to use relief pitchers. He believed a team should use its best pitcher when the score is tied, even in the seventh inning. While some managers did not always follow his advice, his influence is seen everywhere in baseball today. His work turned a simple game into a deep study of numbers and skill.
