It serves as the capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship. The city is the tenth-largest in Poland by population. It is also the second-most densely populated city in the country. Geographically, it sits within the Białystok Uplands on the Podlachian Plain.

The city is located on the banks of the Biała River. This river is approximately 124 miles northeast of Warsaw.

The city's name is tied to its local geography. In old Polish, the term "biały stok" meant a white stream. This refers to the Biała River, which flows through the city center.

While the river may seem small today, it was the original reason for the settlement. Over many centuries, changing borders led to many different spellings of the name. These include Byelostok, Belostok, and Bjalistok.

Białystok experiences a warm summer continental climate. This means the region has warm summers and long, frosty winters. The landscape is defined by significant green spaces. Forests cover about 18% of the city's administrative area.

The history of the area begins in the Stone Age. Archaeologists have found ancient tombs in the Dojlidy district. During the early Iron Age, people built kurgans, which are tombs for chiefs.

In 1437, the area began to develop as a formal settlement. It was part of Lithuania for 132 years before the Union of Lublin in 1569. This union transferred the city to Poland. Later, the Wiesiołowski family owned the settlement and founded its first school.

The Branicki family later became the most influential owners. They built the magnificent Branicki Palace on the site of an older castle.

During this era, the city became a cultural hub. A military technical school was founded in 1745. One of Poland's oldest theaters, the Komedialnia, opened in 1748. The city also became a center for brewing, with 33 breweries recorded by 1771.

In the 19th century, Białystok underwent rapid industrial growth. This was caused by the opening of the Warsaw-Saint Petersburg railway in 1862.

The city became a massive center for the textile industry. It was the largest textile center in Poland after Łódź. Because of this, people called it the "Manchester of the North." The population grew quickly due to these new factories.

By 1897, the population reached 66,000 people. A large majority of these residents were Jewish.

The 20th century brought significant political changes and conflict. After World War I, the city became part of the Second Polish Republic. However, World War II brought occupation by both Germany and the Soviet Union. During the German occupation in 1939, the city saw intense violence. In September 1939, German troops committed murders in the courtyard of Primary School No. 1.
