Leader Lal Krishna Advani led a chariot journey called a Rath Yatra. This helped the party gain more support. By 1996, the BJP became the largest party in Parliament. Atal Bihari Vajpayee led the government for a short time then. Later, his coalition led a full term in office.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, commonly known as the BJP, is a major conservative political party in India. It stands as one of the two most significant political forces in the nation. The party's name translates literally to "Indian People's Party." Politically, the BJP is described as right-wing to far-right on the political spectrum. Its core ideology is centered on Hindutva, which is a form of Hindu nationalism. This ideology seeks to define Indian identity through Hindu cultural values. The party also maintains very close organizational links to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS. The RSS is a far-right paramilitary organization that helped shape the BJP's foundations.

The BJP uses specific symbols to communicate its nationalist and religious identity. Its official symbol is the lotus flower, known scientifically as Nelumbo nucifera.

The lotus is the national flower of India and holds deep cultural significance. In Hinduism, the lotus is a symbol of peace and prosperity. During India's independence movement, nationalists used the lotus to represent revolt against the British Raj. The party also frequently uses the color saffron in its branding and campaigns. Saffron is a highly significant color within Hindu traditions. Most BJP flags are predominantly saffron with a green stripe on the left. This specific color scheme allows the party to project a secular image while maintaining a religious undertone for its supporters.

The history of the BJP began with the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded in 1951.

The politician Shyama Prasad Mukherjee established the Jana Sangh after leaving the Hindu Mahasabha. He intended the group to serve as the political wing of the RSS. The Jana Sangh aimed to protect India's Hindu cultural identity. It also sought to counter what it saw as the appeasement of Muslim people by the ruling Congress party. Early leaders like Deendayal Upadhyaya helped build a strong grassroots network. Upadhyaya also formulated the official doctrine of integral humanism in 1965. This philosophy remains a key part of the party's ideological framework.

Political shifts in the 1970s led to the creation of the modern BJP. In 1975, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a state of emergency. Many Jana Sangh members were imprisoned during this period of political unrest. When the emergency ended, the Jana Sangh merged with other groups to form the Janata Party. This new coalition successfully defeated the Indian National Congress in the 1977 general election. However, the Janata Party dissolved in 1980 after only three years in power. Members of the former Jana Sangh reconvened to form the Bharatiya Janata Party. Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as the first president of this new organization.

Initially, the BJP struggled to gain significant political power. In the 1984 general election, the party won only two seats in the Lok Sabha.

This low performance was partly due to the assassination of Indira Gandhi, which boosted support for the Congress party. The party's fortunes changed during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s. Lal Krishna Advani led a famous chariot journey called the Ram Rath Yatra in 1990. This journey supported the construction of a temple in Ayodhya. The movement helped the BJP grow in strength and influence. By 1996, the BJP had become the largest party in the Parliament.

The party has experienced several distinct periods of leadership and governance. Under Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the BJP led a coalition known as the National Democratic Alliance, or NDA.

The first Vajpayee government lasted only 13 days in 1996. Later, the NDA formed a government that completed a full term, marking the first non-Congress government to do so. Following a defeat in 2004, the BJP spent ten years as the principal opposition party. This period of opposition ended in 2014 when Narendra Modi led the party to a landslide victory. Modi, formerly the chief minister of Gujarat, has since become the Prime Minister of India.

Today, the BJP is a dominant force in Indian politics and governance. Since 2014, the party has held power under the leadership of Narendra Modi. The BJP has won elections in 2014, 2019, and continues to lead a coalition following the 2024 election. The alliance currently governs 20 Indian states and union territories. The party has implemented several major policy changes during its recent rule. These include the revocation of Article 370, which previously granted autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir. The party has also enacted policies that align with the priorities of the RSS. These actions continue to shape the political and social landscape of modern India.
