Because they are part of a protected reserve, most people only visit for science or summer trips. This area helps keep the local plants and animals safe.

The islands are made of a very special kind of pink granite.

This rock is rare in Europe but very common in America. Over a long time, wind and waves have shaped the land into many interesting forms. You can find narrow valleys with steep walls and many deep caves. One famous spot is Furado Grande, which is a huge natural tunnel.

Ancient writers like Ptolemy knew about them, and Romans called the island Saturno. Many different groups like the Vikings and Muslims visited the islands too. In 1513, monks built a monastery to help sailors who were in trouble from shipwrecks. Later, the rocks from that old monastery were used to build a strong fort.

Strong winds often blow against the north-facing cliffs. In the summer, a special sea breeze called the Nortada can push cold water up from deep in the ocean. This brings many nutrients to the surface, which helps sea life grow. The islands have a Mediterranean climate with heavy rains in the winter. Because of the clouds and fog, there are not many hours of bright sunshine.
