Berkshire pig

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Berkshire is a pig from England. It comes from a place called Berkshire. Most of these pigs are black. They have six white markings. They have four white socks on their legs. They also have white on their snout. The tip of their tail is white too. These pigs have prick-ears. This means their ears stand up.

Long ago, these pigs looked different. They were a large, tan color. They also had floppy ears. In the late 1700s, people bred them with small black pigs from Asia. This changed how they look.

Many countries now have Berkshire pigs. They were sent to the United States in the 1800s. The American Berkshire Association started in 1875. It was the first group for a pig breed. The first pig was a boar named Ace of Spades. Some say Queen Victoria bred him.

In Japan, these pigs are very popular. They are often called Kurobuta pork. People like the taste of the meat. In the United States, the meat won taste tests. These pigs are medium in size. Boars weigh about 250 kilograms. Sows weigh about 180 kilograms.
