The Bengali language movement was a major political struggle in East Bengal. It began after the partition of India in 1947. When the British left, the Dominion of Pakistan was created. This new country had two parts that were not connected by land. One part was West Pakistan and the other was East Bengal.

Most people in East Bengal spoke Bengali. However, the government was mostly run by people from the western wing. This caused tension between the two groups of people.

In 1948, the government made a new rule about language. They said Urdu would be the only state language for all of Pakistan. Some leaders even suggested writing Bengali using Arabic or Roman scripts.

This idea was very unpopular with Bengali speakers. They wanted to keep their own alphabet and script. They wanted Bengali to be used in schools and government offices. They also wanted it on stamps and money.

Many brave people stood up to protect their language. A leader named Dhirendranath Datta proposed a law to allow Bengali in the assembly.

His idea was defeated by the government leaders. Students at the University of Dhaka also began to protest. They organized strikes and rallies to show they were unhappy.

Even when leaders were arrested, the people kept asking for their rights.

Things became very serious on February 21, 1952. Students organized a protest to demand their language rights. The police stopped the demonstrators and some students were killed.

This event caused a lot of anger and unrest across the region. After years of fighting for their rights, the government finally changed its mind. In 1956, the government gave Bengali official status. This was a huge victory for the people of East Bengal.

This movement changed the history of the region forever. It helped people feel a strong sense of Bengali identity. This feeling later led to the Bangladesh Liberation War.
