It led to the birth of a new nation called Bangladesh. Before this, the area was known as East Pakistan. It was part of a country called Pakistan, which had two separate parts. One part was West Pakistan and the other was East Pakistan. These two lands were far apart and separated by India.

People in the east felt they were treated unfairly by the leaders in the west.

Many things caused this tension between the two sides. First, there was a big disagreement about language. The government wanted everyone to use Urdu, but most people in the east spoke Bengali.

This led to the Language Movement in 1948 and 1952. Second, the two sides had different ideas about how to run a country. The east wanted more democracy and secularism, which means separating religion from government. Third, the west held most of the political power. They also spent much more money on the western part of the country.

The war began in March 1971 after a big election. An East Pakistani party called the Awami League won the election. However, the leaders in West Pakistan ignored the results. On March 25, 1971, the Pakistani military started a violent crackdown called Operation Searchlight.

In response, the leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared independence. A resistance group called the Mukti Bahini was formed to fight back. This group included soldiers, police, and regular citizens. They used guerrilla warfare to fight the larger Pakistani military.

The conflict became much larger in December 1971. India joined the war to support the Mukti Bahini.

This created a two-front war for Pakistan. The fighting was very intense in both cities and rural areas. Many people had to leave their homes to find safety. About 10 million Bengali refugees fled to the Indian state of West Bengal.
