Benedict Anderson was a famous historian. He was born in China in 1936. His family moved to California and then to Ireland. He grew up to be a teacher at Cornell University. He was a polyglot. This means he could speak many languages. He spoke English, Indonesian, Javanese, Thai, and Tagalog.

Anderson is best known for his book, *Imagined Communities*. In this book, he studied nationalism. Nationalism is the feeling that people belong to one nation. He said nations are "imagined communities." This does not mean they are fake. It means members do not know everyone face-to-face. Yet, they still feel connected.

He believed the printing press helped this happen. When books and papers were made, people read the same words. This helped them feel like one group. He also studied Indonesia. He wrote about things that happened there in 1965. He wanted to tell the truth about the violence in that country. Because of his work, Indonesia banned him for many years. He passed away in Indonesia in 2015.
