Being and Time

philosophy religion Maturity 9-11 Next article →

In 1927, a German thinker named Martin Heidegger wrote a famous book. It is called Being and Time. This book changed how people study ideas. It looks at what it means to be human.

Heidegger used a special word: Dasein. This word means "being there." He used it to describe a living being. He said we are not just watchers of the world. Instead, we are part of the world. We cannot be split from our surroundings. This is what he called "being-in-the-world."

Heidegger also wrote about time. He believed that time has meaning because we are mortal. This means our lives must end. Because we know we will die, we understand time in a unique way. He said we are stretched between our birth and our death. We live in the present while thinking of the future.

To study these ideas, he used a method called phenomenology. This is a way to look at direct experience. He also used a method called the hermeneutic circle. This means looking at small parts of an experience to understand the whole thing. He then looked at the whole thing to understand the parts. This helps a person find deeper meaning.
