Beatboxing

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Beatboxing is a special way of making music using only the human voice. It is a form of vocal percussion that mimics the sounds of drum machines.

Performers use their lips, tongue, throat, and mouth to create many different rhythms. They can even imitate other musical instruments or the sound of a spinning record. This art is very important to hip-hop culture. Many people call it the "fifth element" of hip-hop.

It is a skill that brings people together through sound.

To make these sounds, beatboxers use many different parts of their bodies. They might use their lips to make a strong kick drum sound. Some people use their throat to create a humming noise. They can also tap their fingers against their throats to add more texture.

A cool trick is called the "crab scratch." This is when a person blows and sucks air around their fingers. This makes a sound that sounds just like a record scratching on a turntable. Some artists even use technology like live looping to layer their sounds. This lets them perform a whole song by themselves on stage.

Beatboxing has a long and interesting history. People have used vocal percussion in American music since the 1800s. This includes styles like blues, ragtime, and even religious songs. Some believe it may also come from African traditional music. In those traditions, people use their bodies to make percussion sounds. Famous singers like Michael Jackson even used beatboxing to help write his songs. He would record himself beatboxing on a tape recorder to plan hits like "Billie Jean."

Modern beatboxing really grew in the 1980s in New York City. At that time, drum machines were very expensive for many people to buy. Communities in the city began to use their voices to mimic those machines. The name comes from the early drum machines called "beatboxes." One famous machine was the Roland TR-808, which came out in 1980. Early stars like Doug E. Fresh helped make this style famous. Other pioneers include Swifty, who used inhale sounds, and Rahzel, who can sing and beatbox at once.

Today, beatboxing is a global activity that connects many people. The internet helped it grow very fast. In 2000, Alex Tew started the first online community for beatboxers. In 2003, the first Human Beatbox Convention was held in London. People even compete to see who can gather the most beatboxers together. The current world record was set in 2017 by a group in Hong Kong. They had 6,430 people participating all at once! This shows how much people around the world love this amazing art.
