The Byzantine Empire fought the Seljuk Empire near Manzikert. This place is in modern-day Turkey.

The Byzantine leader was Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes. He led a large army of about 40,000 men. His army had professional soldiers and many helpers. Some of these helpers were mercenaries. Mercenaries are soldiers paid to fight for others.

The Seljuk leader was Alp Arslan.

He led his troops to meet the Byzantines. On August 26, the battle began. The Seljuk fighters used horse archers. They shot arrows from their horses while moving. This made it hard for the Byzantine army to fight back.

During the fight, the Byzantine lines became confused. Some leaders did not follow orders. This led to a big loss for the Byzantines. Romanos was even taken as a prisoner.

This was a very rare event for an emperor.

The defeat changed the region. It made the Byzantine Empire much weaker. Because of this, many Turks moved into the area.
