One group was the Byzantine Empire. The other was the Seljuk Empire. They met at a place called Manzikert.

The Seljuk leader was Alp Arslan.

He led his men to victory. The Byzantine leader was Romanos. He lost the fight.

Romanos was even taken as a prisoner. This was a very big deal. It made the Byzantine Empire weak. It was hard for them to guard their lands.

Because of this, many Turks moved into the area. This changed the land forever. It was a very important moment in history.
