Bastnäsite is a special group of minerals.

Most of these minerals contain rare-earth elements. These are metals that are hard to find in large amounts.

There are three main types of bastnäsite. They are named after the metal inside them. One type has cerium. Another has lanthanum. The third has yttrium.

Most bastnäsite has cerium. This makes it a very important source for that metal.

People found bastnäsite in Sweden in 1838. A chemist named Wilhelm Hisinger described it. He named it after the Bastnäs mine.

Today, we find it in many places. There are big deposits in China. There is also a large mine in California.

To get the metals, workers must use many steps. First, they grind the ore into fine powder. Then, they use a way called flotation. This helps separate the good minerals from plain rock. They also use heat and acid to pull the metals out. This process helps make things like color televisions.
