Baron Samedi is a major Lwa in the Haitian Vodou religion. A Lwa is a type of spirit within this belief system. He is primarily recognized as a Lwa of the dead. He also holds the role of a giver of life. This duality makes him a central figure in Vodou. He serves as the head of the Gede family of Lwa. The Gede are spirits linked to magic, death, and ancestor worship.

The Baron has many different names and forms. He is sometimes called Baron Samdi, Bawon Samedi, or Bawon Sanmdi. He has several incarnations, such as Baron Cimetière, Baron La Croix, and Baron Criminel. He is also sometimes identified with the spirit Guede Nibo. As the leader of the Gede, he oversees lesser spirits. These spirits are often dressed like him. They are also described as rude and crude. However, they lack the charm of their master. They assist in carrying the dead to the underworld.

Visual portrayals of Baron Samedi are very specific. He is frequently depicted as a skeleton. Sometimes, he is shown as a black man with his face painted like a skull. He typically wears a black tail coat and a top hat. He also wears dark glasses. He may have cotton plugs in his nostrils. This appearance mimics a corpse prepared for burial in the Haitian style. He is said to speak with a distinct nasal voice. He is often shown with a cigar or a glass of rum.

In Vodou belief, the Baron performs several vital functions. He spends most of his time in the invisible realm of spirits. He is often found at the crossroads between the living and the dead. When a person dies, he is said to dig their grave. He greets the soul after burial and leads them to the underworld. Because of this, he is known as the Lwa of resurrection. People may call upon him for healing when they are near death. It is believed only the Baron can accept an individual into the realm of the dead. Some believe he can cure any disease or wound if he finds it worthwhile.

His power extends to magic and protection. Followers believe his powers are especially great regarding Vodou curses and black magic. There is a belief regarding the timing of death. If a person is facing a hex that brings them near death, they may survive. This happens if the Baron refuses to dig their grave. In many Haitian cemeteries, his presence is marked. The longest-standing grave of a male is often designated as his grave. A cross called the kwa Bawon is placed at a cemetery crossroads. This represents the meeting of the mortal and spiritual worlds. People often place a black top hat on this cross.

Baron Samedi's personality is complex and contradictory. He is known for disruption, obscenity, and debauchery. He is described as swearing continuously and making filthy jokes to other spirits. He is married to a powerful spirit named Maman Brigitte. Despite his vulgarity, he is known for being suave and charming. He possesses great charisma. This personality was modeled by the former Haitian dictator François Duvalier. Known as Papa Doc, he spoke in a deep nasal tone and wore dark glasses. This connection also links the Baron to secret societies in the Haitian government.

Because of his striking image, the Baron appears frequently in modern media. He is an inspiration for Dr. Facilier in Disney's *The Princess and the Frog*. He appears in the James Bond film *Live and Let Die*. Video games also feature him, including *Smite* and *World of Warcraft*. In the latter, a character named Bwonsamdi is inspired by him. Even computer security has a connection. A vulnerability in the sudo program was named "Baron Samedit." This name combined the spirit's name with the tool sudoedit.
