People hold banquets for many reasons. Some banquets help people bond. These are called solidarity feasts. In these meals, families bring food to share. This helps make social ties stronger. Other banquets are for showing off. These are called promotional feasts. The host provides the food. This helps the host gain respect.

In the past, banquets were often very sweet. They were a grand dessert course. They were sometimes called a sugar collation. In the 1500s, sugar became common in Europe. People even built special houses for these treats. These houses were often on roofs or in large gardens.

Some banquets have many courses. In the Middle Ages, a meal might have 25 dishes per course. Later, meals changed to just two courses. The third course became fruit and nuts.
