Banpo Bridge

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Banpo Bridge is a major piece of infrastructure in Seoul, South Korea. It spans the Han River in the center of the city. This bridge serves as a vital link for vehicular traffic. It connects Seobinggo-dong in the Yongsan District to Banpo-dong in the Seocho District. The bridge is quite wide and long. It is also a famous landmark that attracts many locals and tourists.

This structure is unique because it is a double-decked bridge. It was the first double-deck bridge ever built in South Korea. The top deck is designed for cars and other vehicles. Directly beneath this top level sits the Jamsu Bridge. The Jamsu Bridge is a pedestrian bridge. It is also wide and long. This two-level design allows the bridges to serve different purposes at once.

The Jamsu Bridge has a very specific way of interacting with the river. Its lower deck lies close to the waterline. Because of this, the bridge is designed to submerge during periods of high rainfall. When the water level of the Han River rises, the bridge goes under the water. In 1986, the Jamsu Bridge was changed into an elevated arch shape. This architectural change was made to allow tourist cruise ships to pass underneath it safely.

One of the most famous features is the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain. This fountain is located on the west side of the Banpo Bridge. It was installed in April 2009. The fountain uses a complex system to create its displays. It contains 38 water pumps to move the water. It also uses 380 nozzles to spray the water into the air. To make the show more exciting, the bridge uses lights, speakers, and projectors. The projectors can even display images directly onto the water.

The fountain is a world-class attraction. On November 7, 2008, it was awarded a Guinness World Record. It is recognized as the longest fountain bridge in the world. Between April and October, the fountain holds shows five to six times per day. Each show lasts for 20 minutes. These shows include water, light, and music. The music includes popular songs from South Korea and other countries. The shows only happen if the weather is good.

There are many cultural activities near the bridge at Banpo Hangang Park. Every Saturday between May and October, the park hosts the "Moonlight Square Cultural Weekend." This event runs from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. It features a wide variety of musical genres. Visitors can hear classical music with commentary, a cappella, and popera. The weekend also includes jazz, brass bands, and full orchestras. The Jamsu Bridge itself often hosts events like a yearly fall market with food trucks and live music.

The history of these bridges shows how the city has grown. The lower Jamsu Bridge was completed in 1979. Construction on the Banpo Bridge began later, on August 11, 1980. The Banpo Bridge was finished in November 1982. The project cost 22 billion won, which is about 20 million US dollars. The bridge was built to help reduce the traffic load on the Hangang Bridge. Over the years, the bridges have required maintenance. Repairs took place from December 30, 1994, to June 30, 1996, and again from 1998 to 2002. The bridge was also repaved between October 2003 and 2005.
