Surprisingly, the Pope apologized to him. The Emperor also offered him the position of Bishop of Avila.

Despite these successes, Castiglione faced personal and physical hardships. He married Ippolita Torelli in 1516, but she died only four years later.

He eventually died of the plague in Toledo in 1529. He lived for exactly fifty years, two months, and one day. A monument was later built for him in the sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
