Bahram Chobin was a famous general and leader in the Sasanian Empire. He belonged to the House of Mihran, which was one of the seven great noble families of Iran. His family lived in a place called Ray, located south of modern Tehran. Bahram was known for being a very skilled soldier and a strong leader. His nickname, Chobin, meant "Wooden Shaft" or "Javelin-like." This was likely because he was very tall and slender.

Bahram rose to power through his many successes in war. In 572, he helped capture a Byzantine stronghold called Dara. Later, in 588, a large group of Hephthalite-Turkic invaders attacked the empire's eastern lands. Bahram was chosen to lead an army of 12,000 skilled horsemen to stop them. He won a major victory at the battle of Hyrcanian rock. He even captured a golden throne and the treasury of the Turkic leader, Bagha Qaghan.

Despite these victories, Bahram faced trouble from his own king. The Sasanian king, Hormizd IV, became jealous of Bahram's fame. Hormizd stripped Bahram of his commands and even sent him a chain and a spindle. This was meant to treat him like a lowly slave. This treatment made Bahram very angry, so he started a rebellion. He wanted to bring back the older Arsacid Empire.

As Bahram marched toward the capital city of Ctesiphon, things changed in the royal court. Two brothers named Vistahm and Vinduyih led a coup against King Hormizd IV. They blinded the king and helped his son, Khosrow II, take the throne. Bahram reached Ctesiphon and defeated Khosrow's men near the Nahrawan Canal. In the summer of 590, Bahram declared himself the king of kings. He even began minting his own gold coins to show his power.

Bahram's rule did not last very long. Khosrow II asked the Byzantine Empire for help to win his throne back. With Byzantine support, Khosrow launched a new campaign against Bahram. Bahram's forces were eventually defeated in Mesopotamia. He had to flee to the Western Turkic Khaganate to find safety. However, Khosrow II had him killed shortly after he arrived there. Even though he died, Bahram remained a famous figure in Persian stories.
