Bagratid Armenia

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Bagratid Armenia was a strong and independent land. It was ruled by the Bagratuni family. This kingdom rose after many years of foreign rule. For nearly two hundred years, the Arab Caliphate controlled the region.

Many Armenian noble families fought to keep their lands. Some families, like the Mamikonians, lost their power during these hard times. The Bagratuni family worked hard to build better ties with the Arab leaders. This helped them become the main leaders for the Armenian people.

Building a kingdom takes many careful steps. Ashot I was a very smart leader. He used a measured approach to take back land. He did not fight everyone at once. Instead, he worked with the powerful neighbors nearby. Both the Arabs and the Byzantine Empire wanted his support. The Arabs called him the "prince of princes" in 862. Later, in 884 or 885, the Caliph sent him a crown.

This made Ashot I the first king of Armenia in a very long time. He moved his throne to the fortress-city of Bagaran.

After Ashot I, his son Smbat I became king in 892. Smbat I tried to keep peace with the Byzantines. He also tried to work with Arab leaders like Afshin. Smbat I even won a great victory in 892. He took back the historic city of Dvin from the Arabs.

However, things became difficult for the kingdom. A leader named Yusuf began to attack Armenia. This caused many fights between different Armenian princes. Smbat I eventually died after a hard time with Yusuf. The kingdom faced many new threats during this era.

At its peak, the kingdom was a wonderful place. During the reign of Ashot III, the city of Ani became the capital.

Ani grew into a huge center for trade and culture. Many people traveled there to buy goods and see art. Other Armenian kingdoms also formed nearby. These included Taron, Vaspurakan, Kars, Khachen, and Syunik.

The land was full of life and busy cities. It was a golden time for the Bagratid people.

Every great kingdom eventually faces a decline. In the early 1100s, the kingdom began to fall apart. The Byzantine Empire became very strong in the region. The Byzantine emperor Basil II won many victories. He took over parts of southwestern Armenia. King Hovhannes-Smbat felt he had to give up his land. He promised the land would go to the Byzantines after he died.

Later, Gagik II tried to hold onto the city of Ani. He fought until 1045 when Byzantine forces finally took the kingdom. The era of the Bagratid kings came to an end.
