The Arab Caliphate held power in the region. Many Armenian noble families fought to stay free. Some families lost their lands during these wars.

A leader named Ashot I rose to power. He was part of the Bagratuni family. He worked to move the Arabs out of Armenia. Both the Arabs and the Byzantines wanted his help. In 884, Ashot was named king.

This started the Bagratid kingdom. Other small kingdoms also formed nearby.

Later, King Ashot III made the city of Ani his capital.

Ani became a busy center for trade and art. The kingdom was strong for a time. But the kingdom began to fail in the 1100s. The Byzantine Empire took over parts of the land. King Hovhannes-Smbat had to give up his land. Later, Gagik II tried to fight back. He held the city of Ani until 1045. Then, the Byzantine forces took the kingdom.
