Today, you mostly find it in large casinos. In the past, people played it at house parties. It is a game where two hands compete. These hands are called the "player" and the "banker." You can also bet that the hands will tie. Some players are called high rollers because they bet huge amounts. They might wager hundreds of thousands of dollars on one hand. This makes the game feel very exciting and serious.

Learning the points is the first step to playing.

The cards 2 through 9 are worth their own value. Aces are worth one point. The 10, jack, queen, and king are all worth zero. You find the score using a special way called modulo ten arithmetic. This means you only look at the last digit of the sum. For example, a 6 and a 7 make thirteen. The hand score is just the three. The highest possible score you can get is nine.

Many different versions of the game exist. Baccarat Banque is the oldest form we know about. It is a game for three people. Later, a two-player version called Chemin de Fer appeared. Its name means "railway" in French. It was named this because it was very fast. The most popular version today is Punto Banco. This version was developed in Havana, Cuba, during the 1940s. In Punto Banco, the rules decide if cards are drawn.

The history of the game is a bit of a mystery. Some say it started in the 19th century. Others believe it came to France from Italy in the late 1400s. It may have roots in Asian games like San zhang or Oicho-Kabu. In 1788, King Victor-Amadeus III even banned the game. It was very popular in London at a club called Watier's. A famous man named Beau Brummell lost everything playing there. In 1890, a big scandal happened at a house in Yorkshire. This event involved the Prince of Wales and a cheating accusation.

Modern casinos use a large device called a shoe.

This shoe holds six or eight decks of cards. A dealer or croupier manages the game at the table. In Punto Banco, the casino always acts as the banker. They follow a set of rules called the tableau. This tableau tells the player and banker when to take a third card. The game is mostly about pure chance. This means players cannot use skill to change the luck of the cards.
