The group consists of two highly skilled musicians. Takahiro "Tak" Matsumoto serves as the guitarist, composer, and producer. Koshi Inaba is the vocalist and lyricist. Together, they create a wide range of music. This includes energetic hard rock tracks and softer pop rock ballads. Their ability to blend these styles has made them one of the most successful musical acts globally.

The duo's creative process has evolved through several distinct musical phases. In their early years, they utilized a blend of digital sounds. They used synthesizers and samplers alongside Matsumoto's guitar work. This created an experimental sound that reflected the music scene of the late 1980s. Later, they shifted toward a more organic hard rock sound. They eventually explored soulful blues music as well. This transition was intentional. For example, their album "The 7th Blues" used the blues style to connect with rock fans. This process of stylistic evolution has kept their music fresh for decades.

B'z has achieved unprecedented commercial success through their various releases. They have sold more than 100 million records worldwide. In their native Japan, they are the best-selling music act by certifications. Their record on the Oricon music charts is remarkable. They have released 50 consecutive No. 1 singles. Additionally, they have achieved 27 No. 1 albums and 4 No. 1 EPs. These numbers highlight their consistent ability to capture the interest of the public. In 2008, they were awarded a Guinness World Record for "Best-selling album act in Japan."

The history of B'z began in the late 1980s. Matsumoto was already an active guitarist for various artists. He wanted to form a band and searched for a singer. In 1988, he listened to a demo tape from Koshi Inaba. During their first session, they played songs by The Beatles. They chose to remain a two-man unit because they believed the guitar and human voice were irreplaceable. They debuted in September 1988 with the single "Dakara Sono Te o Hanashite." Unlike many other bands, they waited to perform live until they had enough material. This focus on quality helped them build a strong foundation.

Live performances, which fans call "Live-Gym," are a cornerstone of the B'z experience.

These shows are known for their massive scale and technical innovation. In 1992, their tour featured a huge lighting set called the "Starfish." They even used seats that could rotate 360 degrees. Their concerts have drawn enormous crowds over the years. In 1993, an open-air concert in Hamamatsu gathered 100,000 people over two days. In 1999, they performed at Yokohama International Stadium for 140,000 people. These events demonstrate the deep connection between the duo and their audience.

Significant milestones have also brought B'z international recognition. In 2007, they became the first music act from Asia to be honored on Hollywood's RockWalk. This honor involved having their handprints and signatures displayed.

This achievement placed them alongside many legendary global artists. Their influence is also noted in Japan's pop history. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked them at number 30 on a list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts. This ranking reflects their lasting impact on the industry.

B'z represents a unique intersection of technical skill and pop sensibility. Their work connects the traditions of rock and blues with modern production techniques. By maintaining a small, two-person core, they have preserved a specific musical intimacy.
