They are celebrated for their diverse musical styles and their role as pioneers of visual kei. Visual kei is a musical movement characterized by flamboyant aesthetics and elaborate looks. This style is often compared to glam rock in Western music cultures. The band's sound evolved significantly throughout their career. They began with a heavy power and speed metal style that included symphonic elements. Later, they moved toward a progressive sound that focused on emotional ballads.

The band's musical structure relied on the specific talents of its members. Yoshiki served as both the drummer and the pianist. Toshi provided the lead vocals. The lineup featured several key musicians, including Taiji on bass and Hide on lead guitar. Pata also contributed as a guitarist. The group was known for creating complex and lengthy compositions. A notable example is the title track of their 1993 mini-album, "Art of Life." This single track is 29 minutes long and features heavy orchestration.

The history of the group began long before they reached fame. In 1977, Yoshiki and Toshi formed a band called Dynamite in Tateyama. They were only 11 years old at the time. They later changed the name to Noise in 1978. In 1982, they formed a new group called X. They struggled to fit into the underground punk scene because they were seen as too commercial. To manage their own music, Yoshiki founded Extasy Records in 1986. This allowed them to release their second single, "Orgasm," on their own independent label.

Success came rapidly through a series of important releases and milestones. Their debut album, Vanishing Vision, was released in 1988 on Extasy Records. The first 10,000 copies sold out in just one week. This made them the first independent band to appear on the main Oricon Albums Chart. In 1989, they released Blue Blood on a major label. This album reached number six on the Oricon chart. In 1991, their album Jealousy debuted at number one and sold over 600,000 copies. This album was later certified million by the RIAJ.

The band underwent several changes in personnel and identity. In 1992, bassist Taiji left the group due to musical differences. Heath joined as the new bass player. Around this time, the group changed its name to X Japan. This was done to avoid confusion with an American punk group also named X. In 1995, the band moved away from most of their original visual kei aesthetics. They adopted a more casual look for the release of their album Dahlia. This album also reached number one on the music charts.

X Japan achieved massive commercial success and cultural significance. They have sold over 30 million records throughout their history. The band released five studio albums, six live albums, and 21 singles. Their impact is recognized by major music publications. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked them as number 40 on a list of 100 important Japanese pop acts. Rolling Stone Japan ranked Blue Blood as the 15th greatest Japanese rock album of all time. In 2017, Loudwire named them the best metal band from Japan.

After a period of inactivity, the band experienced a major reunion. They performed their last concert at the Tokyo Dome on December 31, 1997. This was part of a tradition of five consecutive sold-out New Year's Eve shows. The members reunited in 2007 to record the song "I.V." They eventually added Sugizo as a lead guitarist to replace Hide, who died in 1998. The band performed several international shows, including a tour in North America in 2010. In 2011, they began a world tour covering Europe, South America, and Asia.
