He served as the country's second president for many years. His time in power lasted from 1958 until 1969. Before he was president, he was a high-ranking soldier. He was actually the first native commander-in-chief of the Pakistan Army. This meant he was the first local leader of the army. He held this important job from 1951 to 1958.

Ayub Khan's journey began in a small village called Rehana. He was born there on May 14, 1907. He went to school by riding on a mule's back. Later, he studied at Aligarh Muslim University. He also trained at the Royal Military College in Sandhurst. He could speak four different languages very well. These were Urdu, Pashto, English, and Hindko. He joined the army as a second lieutenant in 1928. He later fought in the Second World War in Burma.

In 1958, a big change happened in the government. Ayub Khan took control through a military coup. This was the first time this happened in Pakistan. He became the president after President Iskander Mirza was removed. During his presidency, he made many big decisions for the land. He worked closely with the United States for military help. He also made the country closer to China. However, these choices made relations with the Soviet Union difficult.

Many people call his era the "Decade of Development."

He helped the economy grow very quickly. He built huge things like dams and water stations. He even started a space program for the country. In 1962, Pakistan launched its first uncrewed space mission. But this growth was not the same for everyone. Most of the new money went to a small group of rich people. The tax system was also quite weak.

Things became difficult for Ayub Khan toward the end. There was a war with India in 1965. This war ended in a stalemate, which means neither side won. In 1967, food prices went up very high. This caused many people to protest in the streets. Large strikes and protests happened across the whole country. Because of this, Ayub Khan resigned in March 1969. He chose General Yahya Khan to take his place. Ayub Khan died in 1974 after a short illness.
