Ay served as a pharaoh for a short time. Some experts think he ruled for about four years. Other researchers believe he may have ruled for up to nine years. He lived during the late 14th century BC. His royal name was Kheperkheperure. This name means "Everlasting are the Manifestations of Ra." His other name was Ay it-netjer. This meant "Ay, Father of the God."

Before he became king, Ay had many important jobs. He worked as a vizier for several pharaohs. A vizier is a high-ranking advisor to the ruler. He served under the pharaoh Akhenaten and the young pharaoh Tutankhamun.

Ay also worked with the army. He reached a high rank called Overseer of All the Horses of His Majesty. This job was part of the elite group of chariot drivers. He also held the title of Fan-bearer on the Right Side of the King. This position showed that the king trusted him very much.

Ay's life was full of connections to the royal family. Some people believe he was from a place called Akhmim. He might have been the son of a man named Yuya and a woman named Thuya. This would make him a relative of the famous Queen Tiye.

His wife was named Tey. She was known as the nurse for the famous Queen Nefertiti. Some people think Ay might have been the father of Nefertiti. However, there is no proof to show this is true. These ideas are based on clues rather than certain facts.

Ay became the pharaoh after Tutankhamun died. Tutankhamun was a very young king with no children. This left a gap in leadership that Ay filled.

Ay helped bring back the old religious ways in Egypt. He even performed special ceremonies for the dead king. One famous scene shows Ay performing the "Opening of the Mouth" ceremony. This was a very important ritual for the deceased.

Some historians once thought Ay was involved in Tutankhamun's death. Modern scans of the mummy have not proven this theory.

It is hard to know everything about Ay today. His successor was a man named Horemheb. Horemheb wanted to erase the memory of Ay and other leaders.

This act is called damnatio memoriae. Because of this, many of Ay's buildings were destroyed or changed. We can still see some of his work in museums. We can also see his name on special plates and stones. These items help us learn about his short but important time as king.
