technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The AVE is a fast train service in Spain. Its name means "Spanish High Speed." The name also sounds like the Spanish word for "bird." Renfe is the company that runs these trains. The first AVE service started in 1992. It ran between Madrid, Córdoba, and Seville.

These trains can go very fast. Some models can reach 380 km/h. That is about 236 mph. There are many types of AVE trains. Some are made by Alstom. Others are made by Talgo or Siemens. These different trains have different seats and speeds.

The trains connect many cities. Most routes start or end in Madrid. One big station is Puerta de Atocha. Another big station is Chamartín. Some trains even travel to France. They connect cities like Barcelona to Lyon.

Many people use this rail system. In 2025, a record 43.8 million people rode the AVE. This is a very big number. The train network is still growing every year.
