Autumn is one of the four temperate seasons on Earth. It serves as a vital transition between the warmth of summer and the cold of winter.

In the Northern Hemisphere, this period begins in September. In the Southern Hemisphere, the season starts in March. As the season progresses, the duration of daylight decreases noticeably. This means that nights become longer as the year moves toward the winter solstice. The winter solstice occurs in December for the Northern Hemisphere and in June for the Southern Hemisphere. Along with shorter days, the temperature also cools considerably during this time.

One of the most striking biological processes in autumn involves deciduous trees. These are trees that shed their leaves annually. As daytime and nighttime temperatures drop, the leaves undergo a dramatic color change. This visual shift happens as the trees prepare to shed their foliage.

This cycle is a key feature of temperate climates. The cooling weather acts as a signal for the trees to enter a period of rest. This natural rhythm ensures the trees can survive the upcoming winter months.

There are many different ways to define the dates of autumn. Meteorologists in the Northern Hemisphere typically define the season using the Gregorian calendar months of September, October, and November. In the Southern Hemisphere, they use March, April, and May.

Other traditions use different markers. The traditional East Asian solar term system defines autumn as starting around August 8 and ending near November 7. In Ireland, the national meteorological service uses the standard northern months. However, the Irish Calendar follows ancient Gaelic traditions where autumn lasts from August through October.

History shows that the names we use for this season have changed over time. The word "autumn" is derived from the Latin word *autumnus*. It may also come from an ancient Etruscan root related to the passing of the year.

Before the 16th century, people often used the term "harvest" to describe this time. As populations moved from farms to towns, "autumn" became the standard name for the season. In North America, the term "fall" is very common. This word likely comes from Middle English expressions like "fall of the leaf" or "fall of the year." While "fall" became less common in Britain, English settlers brought it to North American colonies during the 17th century.

Autumn is deeply connected to many cultural celebrations and harvest festivals. These events often celebrate the abundance of ripe foods. In the United States and Canada, Thanksgiving is a major national holiday. The Jewish holiday Sukkot also functions as a harvest festival.

Many Indigenous peoples in the Americas hold festivals tied to gathering wild foods. In China, the Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the Moon Festival. These celebrations often mix a feeling of gladness for the harvest with a sense of melancholy. This melancholy comes from the approaching harsh weather and the end of summer.

In the Northern Hemisphere, autumn is also the time for Halloween on October 31. This holiday is influenced by the Celtic festival of Samhain.

Historically, this was a time for feasting but also a time to recognize the end of the growing season. Today, many businesses use the autumn months to promote Halloween products. In North America, seasonal foods like pumpkins and apples are very popular. People often use these ingredients for treats or to make apple cider. This connection to food and celebration is a defining characteristic of the season.

Beyond holidays, autumn influences many modern social systems. In North America, it marks the start of a new school year for many children. It is also a busy time for media, as television networks debut new series in late September or October.

Sports also follow an autumnal schedule. American football is played almost exclusively during these months. Major League Baseball concludes its season with the World Series, often called the "Fall Classic." Meanwhile, many summer sports like tennis and golf wrap up their seasons as the weather cools. This shows how the changing season affects everything from education to entertainment.
