Autarky

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Autarky is a word used to describe being self-sufficient.

When a group or a country practices autarky, they try to provide everything they need on their own. They aim to control their own resources and goods. This can apply to an entire nation or just one small thing, like food or water. Some places might focus on growing all their own food for safety. Others might try to control a specific raw material. This way, they do not have to rely on other lands for what they need to survive.

This idea has many different roots in history. The word comes from the Ancient Greek words for "self" and "to suffice."

Long ago, Greek thinkers called Stoics believed in being independent from outside things. They thought a person should only depend on their own goodness. Another group called Epicureans thought autarky meant needing very little to be happy. In the past, some early societies were naturally self-sufficient. Nomadic groups moved to find food and did not rely on big trade networks. Later, the Greek political culture also valued the idea of local self-rule and economic independence.

Many different kinds of people have used autarky to reach their goals.

Some leftist movements used it to build new ways of living. For example, the early USSR tried a system called war communism to be self-sufficient. In the 19th century, some Black communities in North Carolina built "hidden economies." They used fishing and farming to stay independent from the larger economy. Even during the Civil Rights Movement, people used small-scale autarky. During the Montgomery Bus Boycott, people set up their own systems to help each other. These groups used self-reliance to find strength and protect their way of life.

History also shows how powerful leaders and empires used these ideas.

The Ming dynasty in China once had a very closed economy. They used a huge system of depots to move goods made in local farms. One of these depots was in the Forbidden City and was the largest in the world. The Incan Empire also used a system where communities provided goods on command. In the 1900s, some leaders in India and Tanzania used autarky to stay independent. They wanted to grow their own nations without being controlled by huge powers like the United States or the Soviet Union.

Today, most economists have a different view of autarky.

Most experts believe that free trade is better for the world. They say that trading between countries helps economies grow and makes life better. They argue that "protectionism," or blocking trade, can actually hurt a country's wealth. However, some people in developing nations still find value in these ideas. They use them to try and stop larger nations from dominating their economies. Whether a country chooses to trade or stay self-sufficient is a big decision that shapes its future.
