Autarky

society Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Autarky is a way for a group to be self-sufficient. This means they try to make everything they need. They do not rely on other places for goods. The word comes from an old Greek term. It means "self-sufficiency."

Many groups have tried this in history. In ancient times, some people lived as nomads. They moved to find food and did not trade much. In China, some thinkers liked small, self-sufficient groups. They thought this would stop war and greed.

Some groups used autarky to stay free. In the late Roman Empire, some people formed their own towns. They even made their own coins. In the past, some Black communities in North Carolina built hidden economies. They used fishing and farming to survive. This helped them stay strong and independent.

Today, some countries use these ideas. They might want to grow all their own food. This helps them stay ready for any trouble. Most economists do not like autarky. They say that free trade helps the world grow. They believe trading with others makes life better for everyone.
