Their bodies were athletic, with long, slender legs and powerful neck musculature. This build allowed them to navigate vast grasslands effectively. The skull was elongated to support massive horns. The history of the aurochs is deeply intertwined with human development. Archaic hominins, including Neanderthals, interacted with these animals long ago. Humans depicted aurochs in Paleolithic cave paintings and Ancient Egyptian reliefs. In the ancient Near East, the animal symbolized power and sexual potency. People even used their large horns for drinking vessels or religious offerings. During the Neolithic Revolution, two separate domestication events occurred. One led to the taurine cattle (Bos taurus) in the Fertile Crescent. The other led to the zebu cattle (Bos indicus) in India.

Our understanding of the aurochs has grown through scientific discovery. Ludwig Heinrich Bojanus proposed the name Bos primigenius in 1825. He was the first to describe the skeletal differences between wild aurochs and domestic cattle. In 1758, Carl Linnaeus had used the name Bos taurus for feral cattle. Later, researchers like Hugh Falconer and Philippe Thomas identified different fossil remains in India and Algeria. In 2003, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature officially recognized the name Bos primigenius. This solidified its status as a valid scientific name for the wild species.

The aurochs faced a progressive decline in its natural range. Habitat loss and hunting by humans reduced their numbers throughout the Holocene. The population contracted from a wide range spanning Western Europe to East Asia.

The very last known fossil remains were discovered in Bulgaria. These remains date to the late 17th or early 18th century. This marked the final disappearance of the species from the wild. Their loss changed the landscapes they once inhabited.

Even though they are gone, the aurochs lives on through modern biology. Some contemporary cattle breeds still carry physical traits from their ancestors. For example, some bulls show a dark coat with a light eel stripe along the back. Others may have a lighter color or horn shapes that look like the original aurochs.
