These people, known as early modern humans, moved from Western Asia into Europe and Siberia. They may have arrived as early as 56,800 years ago. While they lived there, they met the Neanderthals who already lived in Europe. These two different groups even had children together.

This history helps us understand how modern people are related to the past.

Life for these people changed as the weather changed. First, the Aurignacian culture spread across the land. Later, the Gravettian culture appeared around 30,000 years ago. A huge cold period called the Last Glacial Maximum happened about 21,000 years ago.

During this time, much of Europe became a frozen desert. Because of the cold, two different groups formed. The Solutrean group lived in the southwest. The Epigravettian group lived from Italy to the East European Plain.

Scientists learned about these people through amazing discoveries. In 1868, a scientist named Louis Lartet found five skeletons. He found them at a rock shelter in France called Cro-Magnon. This discovery happened by accident while workers built a road for a railway. At first, people had different ideas about who these people were. Later, the study of evolution helped scientists understand them better. They moved past old, incorrect theories to learn the true story.

Cro-Magnons were very different from many people living today. They were quite strong and had large brains. Their faces were broad with big teeth and prominent brow ridges.

They were also very tall, much like people in modern times. They had darker skin than many Europeans today. They hunted large animals and used tools like spears and harpoons.

They even had trade paths that stretched 900 kilometers long.

These early humans were also very creative. They made beautiful cave paintings and small statues called Venus figurines.

Cro-Magnons, also known as European early modern humans (EEMH), were the first members of the species *Homo sapiens* to inhabit Europe and Siberia. They migrated from Western Asia and may have occupied the European continent as early as 56,800 years ago.

These populations were not isolated; they interacted and interbred with the indigenous Neanderthals (*Homo neanderthalensis*). Neanderthals had lived in Europe and Western Asia for hundreds of thousands of years before they went extinct approximately 35,000 to 40,000 years ago. This interaction created a complex genetic history. While some early lineages left little detectable ancestry in later Europeans, others survived to become ancestors of Mesolithic hunter-gatherers. These survivors, known as Western Hunter-Gatherers (WHG), form one of the principal ancestral components of present-day European populations.

The development of Cro-Magnon societies is marked by distinct cultural stages known as industries. The first major culture was the Aurignacian, which spread across Europe after 40,000 years ago. This culture emerged during a period of extreme seasonality and was influenced by the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption near Naples, which covered eastern Europe in ash.

The Aurignacian was followed by the Gravettian culture around 30,000 years ago. The Gravettian later split into two distinct groups due to major climatic changes. The Solutrean culture developed in southwestern Europe, while the Epi-Gravettian culture emerged from Italy to the East European Plain.

As the climate warmed, the Solutrean evolved into the Magdalenian culture by 20,000 years ago, leading to the recolonization of much of Europe.

Climate played a massive role in shaping how these humans lived. Around 29,000 years ago, cooling intensified, leading to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This peak occurred about 21,000 years ago.

During the LGM, massive glaciers covered Scandinavia, the Baltic region, and the British Isles. The Alps were also covered in ice, and much of Europe became a polar desert. This harsh environment forced humans to adapt. Before the LGM, Cro-Magnons lived in low population densities and hunted big game animals. Following the LGM, as the climate changed, population density increased. Because big game animals were becoming scarce, humans shifted to a "broad spectrum revolution," relying more on small or aquatic game.

Physically, Cro-Magnons were quite different from many modern populations. They were generally more robust, possessing larger brains, broader faces, and more prominent brow ridges. They also had bigger teeth and a tall stature similar to post-industrial humans.

Interestingly, the first Cro-Magnons likely had darker skin tones than most modern Europeans. Natural selection for lighter skin did not begin until about 30,000 years ago. Despite the harsh conditions, they maintained expansive trade routes that could stretch as long as 900 km (560 mi). While their life expectancy was typically under 40 years, they may have had higher fertility rates than Neanderthals, helping their populations grow.

The discovery of Cro-Magnon remains is tied to a specific historical event in France. In 1868, the French paleontologist Louis Lartet discovered five skeletons at the Cro-Magnon rock shelter in Les Eyzies, Dordogne.

This discovery happened accidentally while a road was being constructed for a railway station. Initially, these finds were interpreted through a creationist model, where people believed they represented groups wiped out by a Great Flood. Later, as the theory of evolution became popular in the late 19th century, the subject was unfortunately used for scientific racism. These incorrect racial theories were eventually overturned by the mid-20th century.

Cro-Magnon culture is famous for its incredible artistic achievements. They created a diverse array of works, including cave paintings, animal figurines, and Venus figurines.

For example, the Mesolithic Western Hunter-Gatherers (WHG) contributed significantly to the current European genome. Most present-day Europeans carry a 40–60% WHG genetic ratio.
