A baby bison weighs only about 25 to 35 kilograms at birth. As they grow, males become much larger than females. A big male can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms. They also have a unique way of communicating. When a bison feels anxious, it makes a growl-like sound. In Poland, people call this sound "chruczenie." This sound is also heard during the mating season.

The history of the bison is a story of survival. Long ago, they lived across much of Europe and Asia. They lived in places from Spain all the way to the Caucasus Mountains.

Even ancient writers like Aristotle wrote about them in the 4th century BC. To save the species, people used captive breeding programmes. This means they raised bison in safe places to make more. By the late 2010s, there were several thousand bison again. In 1996, they were listed as endangered, but their status has since improved. They are now considered near-threatened.

You can see how the bison connects to our world today. They are very special to the lands where they live. In fact, the bison is a national animal of both Poland and Belarus.

It is recognized as the heaviest wild land animal currently living in Europe. This species, scientifically named *Bison bonasus*, is one of only two living bison species in the world. The other is the American bison. The European bison is also called the zubr or the European buffalo. It plays a vital role in the ecosystems of the forests where it lives.

Physically, the European bison has distinct features that separate it from its American relatives.

While both are large, the wisent typically has shorter hair on its head, neck, and forequarters. However, it possesses a longer tail and longer horns than the American species. Size varies significantly between males and females. A large male can weigh up to 1,000 kilograms or even more. In the Białowieża Forest, adult males average around 800 kilograms. Females are smaller, averaging about 500 kilograms. Even calves start relatively small, weighing only 25 to 35 kilograms at birth.

Historically, the European bison was once much more widespread across the continent. During the Last Glacial Period, they lived in areas ranging from Spain to the Caucasus Mountains.

Genetic studies show two main mitochondrial lineages existed in the past. The Bb1 lineage spanned from France to the Caucasus but went extinct around 9,900 years ago. All modern European bison belong to the Bb2 lineage. This lineage expanded westward from the Caucasus at least 21,000 to 22,000 years ago. This long history shows how the species has adapted to changing climates.

Three distinct subspecies of the European bison existed in recent history.

The first was the Carpathian wisent (*B. b. hungarorum*), which was hunted to extinction by 1852. The second was the Caucasian wisent (*B. b. caucasicus*), which disappeared in 1927. The third and only surviving subspecies is the lowland European bison, or the nominate subspecies (*B. b. bonasus*). This surviving group was preserved through captive breeding. These animals were eventually reintroduced to many different European countries to rebuild their populations.

The survival of the bison is a story of extreme decline and careful recovery. During the Middle Ages, bison populations began to shrink as humans expanded. People hunted them for meat, hides, and even drinking horns. By the early 20th century, the species had been hunted to extinction in the wild. The last wild lowland bison was shot in the Białowieża Forest in 1921.

The species faced total disappearance until humans intervened. Through dedicated captive breeding programs, the population grew to several thousand by the late 2010s.

Conservation efforts have led to a significant change in the bison's status. In 1996, the International Union for Conservation of Nature classified them as an endangered species. Since then, their status has improved to vulnerable and later to near-threatened. While they are no longer in immediate danger of extinction, they are still absent from most of their historical range. They remain a symbol of successful wildlife management. Today, they are celebrated as national animals in both Poland and Belarus.

Ancient Greek and Roman writers also documented them, such as Aristotle in the 4th century BC. The relationship between the European bison and the extinct aurochs is a subject of scientific study. While their nuclear DNA shows they are close relatives, their mitochondrial DNA is more closely related to aurochs and domestic cattle. This suggests a complex history of ancient genetic mixing between these species.
