An audit is a careful check of information. It is an independent study. This means the person checking is not part of the group being studied. They look at facts to see if they are true.

In the past, audits were very different. The word comes from a Latin word. It means "to hear." In medieval Britain, auditors would hear accounts read out loud. They did this to find mistakes or lies. This helped keep things fair.

Today, audits cover many things. Most audits look at money. These are called financial audits. They check if bank balances and records are right. Some audits check how a company uses energy. Others check how computers work. These are called IT audits. They make sure data stays safe.

Different people do this work. External auditors work for other firms. They give an opinion to the public. Internal auditors work for the company itself. They help the company improve its ways. In the United States, some audits are required by law. These are called statutory audits. They help people trust that the facts are fair.
