This plant is a perennial, which means it lives for many years. It can grow into a small shrub with a fleshy root. The plant has dull purple flowers that smell very faint. It also grows berries that start green and turn a shiny black.

These berries look sweet and might remind you of cherries. However, the plant is extremely toxic to humans and many animals.

The plant works by using natural chemicals called tropane alkaloids.

These chemicals are found in every part of the plant. The roots have the most, containing about 1.3% of these substances. The leaves have 1.2%, while the berries have 0.7%. When a person eats the plant, these chemicals disrupt the nervous system. This system usually controls things we do without thinking, like breathing. The toxins can cause a fast heart rate and blurred vision. They can also cause confusion or hallucinations. Because of this, it is best to wear gloves if you touch it.

People have known about this plant for a very long time. In the first century BC, Cleopatra used extracts to change her eye appearance.

During the Renaissance, people used it as a cosmetic for their skin. The name "bella-donna" comes from Italian words for "beautiful woman." A famous scientist named Carl Linnaeus gave it its formal name in 1753. He chose "Atropa" after a Greek goddess named Atropos. In myths, she was one of the three Fates who decided life. Linnaeus used this name because the plant can be so dangerous.

Scientists have studied the plant to find its specific parts.

A German chemist named Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge began this work. Later, a pharmacist named Heinrich F. G. Mein found a pure form of atropine in 1831. This was a major step for modern medicine. Today, doctors use these same chemicals as pharmaceutical anticholinergics. These are medicines that help control certain bodily functions. While the plant is dangerous, its parts are very important for science. We must use them with great care and precision.

Even though belladonna is a poison, it is a close relative of the eggplant. It also shares a family with chili peppers and tobacco. You can tell belladonna apart from the harmless black nightshade by its fruit. Belladonna berries grow alone and are quite large. Black nightshade berries grow in clusters like tiny tomatoes. It is amazing how plants that look similar can be so different. Nature has many ways of protecting itself with these strong chemicals.
