space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. It has very little air. Scientists call this thin air an exosphere.

This air is made of many things. It has hydrogen, helium, and oxygen. It also has sodium, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Some of these come from the solar wind. The solar wind is a stream of particles from the Sun. Other parts come from the planet's crust. The crust is the outer layer of the planet.

Sunlight pushes these gases away from the planet. This creates a long tail behind Mercury. The tail looks like a comet.

Sodium is the main part of this tail. It can stretch far into space. Even meteors help make the air. When meteors hit the surface, they turn into vapor.

It is hard to study Mercury from Earth. The Sun is too bright for our telescopes. We must use space probes to learn about it. The MESSENGER probe found many new things there.
