Most planets are made of rock. But some are different. These are called iron planets.

An iron planet has a big core of iron. It has very little mantle. A mantle is the layer of rock around a core. These planets are small. They are also very dense. This means they are very heavy for their size.

How do they form? One way is through giant impacts. A huge crash can strip away the rocky parts. This leaves the metal core behind. Other models say they form near big stars. These stars have disks of iron-rich material.

Mercury is the largest iron planet in our Solar System. Other big ones are called super-Mercuries. They are not like Earth. They cool down very fast. Because of this, they have no plate tectonics. They also lack a strong magnetic field. Some might even have lakes. These lakes would be made of iron carbonyl. That is a special liquid. Science fiction writers call these "Cannonball" planets.
