Asus produces an extensive catalog of technology. Their hardware includes desktop computers, laptops, netbooks, and tablet PCs. They also manufacture essential internal components like motherboards and graphics cards. For networking, they create Wi-Fi routers and other equipment. The company's history is defined by a famous moment of technical problem-solving. In 1989, four hardware engineers named Tzu-Hsien Tung, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh, and M.T. Liao founded the company in Taipei. At that time, they were former employees of Acer. During this era, established companies like IBM received new Intel processors months before others. The Asus founders attempted to design a motherboard for the Intel 486 processor without having the actual chip. When they eventually approached Intel for a testing sample, they discovered Intel was struggling with its own 486 motherboard. Asus provided a solution that fixed Intel's issue. Because their design worked perfectly without modification, Intel began providing Asus with engineering samples ahead of their competitors.

The name "Asus" has a unique origin story. According to the company, the name comes from Pegasus, the winged horse of Greek mythology. The company chose to use only the last four letters of the word. This was a strategic decision to ensure the name appeared near the top of alphabetical listings. In Chinese, the company is often called Huáshuò, which means "Eminence." Over the years, Asus has used several marketing taglines. These include "Rock Solid. Heart Touching" and "Inspiring Innovation Persistent Perfection." Since 2013, they have used the slogan "In Search of Incredible."

Asus has undergone major structural changes to manage its growing empire. In January 2008, the company underwent a massive restructuring. It split into three independent entities to focus on different tasks. Asus focused on branded computers and electronics. Pegatron was created to handle OEM manufacturing of components. Unihan Corporation was established for non-PC manufacturing, such as molding and cases. In 2010, Asus later spun off Pegatron as a separate company. This allowed the different branches of the business to operate with more independence.

The company is well known for several specific product lines. One major line is the Vivo series, which includes VivoBooks, VivoPCs, and VivoWatches. They also have a strong presence in the gaming market through the Republic of Gamers, or ROG, ecosystem.
