Scientists use the ADS to find the newest research.

How does it work? The system uses a special search engine. It looks through titles and abstracts. An abstract is a short summary of a paper. The engine can even search for specific objects in space. It uses data from other big databases to find them.

The ADS is used all over the world. There are twelve mirror sites in twelve countries. These sites help share the data quickly. The main server is in Massachusetts. To keep things organized, the system uses XML. XML is a way to store data in a clear format. This helps the computer find information easily. The ADS also keeps a list of author names. This helps people find papers even if a name is spelled in different ways.
