John Jacob Astor was the most famous founder of the family empire. He was the youngest of four sons born to Johann Jacob Astor and Maria Magdalena vom Berg. In 1778, John Jacob and his brother George moved to London. They started a company that manufactured flutes. In 1783, John Jacob moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He later moved to New York City to become a merchant. He traded many goods, including opium, furs, pianos, and real estate.

John Jacob Astor built a massive commercial network across the continent. In 1811, his fur-trading company established a post at Fort Astoria. This was the first United States community on the Pacific coast. He financed the Astor Expedition from 1810 to 1812 to reach this outpost. The post was located in the disputed Oregon Country. Control of this fort was very important for British and American territorial claims.

Other family members also left a lasting mark on history. John Jacob's brother, Henry, emigrated to America as well. Henry was a passionate enthusiast of horse racing. He purchased a thoroughbred horse named Messenger from England in 1788. This specific horse became the founding sire for all Standardbred horses in the United States. This connection shows how the family's influence reached into animal breeding and sports.

As the 19th century progressed, the Astors became one of the wealthiest families in America. By the end of the century, some family members moved to England. There, they achieved high prominence in British society. Some descendants were granted hereditary peerages, which are titles of nobility. These included the titles of Viscount Astor and Baron Astor of Hever.

The family's wealth was often tied to land and property. In New York, they were known as "the landlords of New York." Their name is still found on many places today. This includes the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and Astor Place. In the Bronx, Astor Avenue marks where they once stabled horses. Even the neighborhood of Astoria in Queens was renamed to encourage John Jacob Astor to invest there.

The Astor legacy continues through many public works and global names. They provided support for the New York Public Library. In England, the family gifted Oakwood Park to the Borough of Maidstone for education. This land once held the Astor of Hever School. You can find the name Astor in many different ways today. There is Astor Street in Chicago and towns named Astor in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, and Kansas. Even Mount Astor in Antarctica was named after Vincent Astor by the explorer Richard E. Byrd.
