The asteroid belt is a ring of rocky objects.

It sits in the space between Mars and Jupiter. This area is called the main belt. It holds many solid bodies called asteroids. These are small objects that look like stars.

Most asteroids are very far apart. On average, they stay one million kilometers away from each other. This makes it safe for spacecraft to fly through.

Some asteroids are quite large. Ceres is the biggest one. It is a dwarf planet. A dwarf planet is a large object that orbits the Sun. Ceres is about 950 km wide. Other large ones are Vesta, Pallas, and Hygiea.

How did the belt form? Long ago, small bits of dust and gas clumped together. These clumps became planetesimals. These are the small building blocks of planets. But Jupiter's gravity pulled on them. This pull broke the clumps apart. Instead of making a planet, they stayed as many small pieces. Most of the original mass was lost long ago.
